Journalists of Mira Bhayandar area today staged a protest ‘dharna’ in front of the Bhayander police station demanding action against local MLA Narnendra Mehta who, along with thousands of his followers, allegedly abused a local journalist on the night of February 24.
It all started after a journalist Vasant Mane, in his publication, printed the picture of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavais clad in a saree dancing to the tune of Shiv Sena party president Uddhav Thackery after the declaration of the Municipal Corporations, Zilla Parishads and Panchyat Samitis elections in the state.
The publication irked the BJP activists and the local MLA Mehta, along with his followers, on February 24, staged a protest at the local police station. Later, the irate mob marched to the residence of the editor and abused him and his wife giving them threats.
The local journalists association, which took the matter seriously, went to the local police making it clear that they did not support the act of the editor. However, the manner in which the MLA had created a scene and fear in the region at a time when prohibitory orders were in force was unwarranted.
As the police failed to act despite the request of the journalists, the journalists today staged a day-long dharna in front of the police station reiterating their demand. Mane incidentally happens to be the President of the local journalists association.
